Nyala

Tragelaphus angasii

Living in groups of 2-10 individuals, nyala are slenderly built. Females and young bulls look similarly with brown coats, no horns, and 10 or more white vertical stripes. Males have tremendous charcoal-grey coats with shaggy yet distinguished undercoats which cover their stripes. Males’ coloring only matches the females’ on their lower legs. Although mostly docile and elusive, they can become quite protective of their chosen thickets and brush. Nyala can live to 16 years, and typical males’ horns range from 23-33 inches.
